The Invisible Craft: Surface Preparation
May 3, 2026
If painting is an art, then surface preparation is the canvas on which that art is created. It's the most time-consuming part of any project, and it's entirely invisible in the final result — which is exactly the point.
Why Preparation Matters
Paint adheres to a surface. If that surface is compromised — by dirt, grease, loose material, or moisture — the paint will eventually fail. Bubbling, peeling, cracking — every common paint failure can be traced back to inadequate preparation.
The Steps We Never Skip
Cleaning
Every surface is cleaned before any work begins. For kitchens and bathrooms, this means degreasing. For exteriors, it often means pressure washing followed by adequate drying time.
Repair
Cracks are opened, filled, and sanded smooth. Damaged drywall is patched. Rotted wood is replaced, not just covered.
Priming
Primer isn't just "the first coat of paint." It's a specialized coating designed to seal the surface, block stains, and create the ideal foundation for the topcoat.
The Time Investment
On a typical interior project, preparation accounts for 60-70% of the total labor time. This ratio surprises most homeowners, but it's the single most important factor in achieving a professional result.
When you see a beautifully painted room, you're actually seeing the quality of the preparation beneath it.
